It is with mixed emotions that we announce the well-deserved retirement of our admired colleague, Carl Barnes, effective January 1, 2024. After an exemplary career spanning nearly 40 years, Carl will embark on a new chapter filled with personal pursuits and time with loved ones.
Carl has been an integral part of our firm’s success for more than 20 years, having joined Morse, Barnes-Brown & Pendleton in 1999 after spending several years in-house and beginning his career at Hale and Dorr LLP (now Wilmer Hale). His previous experience as vice president and general counsel at PARAXEL International Corporation, his work as deputy general counsel of Thermo Electron Corporation (now Thermo Fisher Scientific, Inc.), and his stint as vice president and general counsel at Sequoia Systems, Inc. are part of what set him apart from others in his field and allowed him insight into the needs and challenges of corporate in-house counsel. A problem-solver and connector by nature, Carl guided and advised clients toward practical solutions, keeping the client’s best interests ever at the forefront.
Throughout his tenure, Carl has been a guiding force not only in client service but in shaping our firm and nurturing the talents of younger associates. His wisdom, mentorship, and astute leadership have inspired many. Over the years, Carl served on the Firm’s Management, Compensation, Marketing, Technology, and Space/Move Committees, offering thoughtful insight on each occasion.
Always embodying the highest standards of legal excellence, professionalism, and dedication, Carl’s passion for the law and unwavering commitment to his clients have left an indelible mark on the Firm’s culture and values. We are immensely grateful for his lasting contributions and the legacy he leaves behind. As much as we will miss his presence, we are excited for him as he embarks on this new phase of life filled with friends, family, cycling, and sailing.
Please join us in congratulating Carl on his retirement and in expressing our gratitude for his outstanding service and invaluable contributions to Morse.
